I studied property, then spent three years in lettings management: a thousand homes to look after, and the phone ringing from morning to night. Most callers were asking a question whose answer should have been written down somewhere: an opening time, a price, a procedure. Every missing piece of information ends up as a phone call.
Then three years as an investment analyst: valuing offices, shops and warehouses, and saying what they actually earned, not what they looked like they were worth. I kept that reflex for websites. A developer wants a clean site, a designer wants an original one. I want to know whether the phone rings more than before.
So I won't talk to you about typefaces or programming languages. We start with your situation, then with what people type into Google and what makes them call rather than close the page. A site has to look good, obviously. But pretty and empty is no use to anyone: it has to convert first, and earn you money.
